Plumber illustrates the sentiment felt by growing numbers of tradesmen

Appearing on Channel 4 News, plumber Ryan Price illustrated the sentiment felt by growing numbers of tradesmen across the UK. The economics of returning to work are now becoming increasingly important for both the government and individual workers, especially the self-employed who are unable to rely on the luxury of furloughed wages. Ryan told Channel 4 News: “Boris is sort of leaving it up to us a little bit. If you feel safe to do so, do it. It’s not really hard to understand. I can’t understand why being sensible in what you are doing and stay 2 metres apart when you can and wearing your PPE at work is that hard to understand. What do you want a full handbook to tell you what to do?”

A number of trade associations have started to issue detailed guidance on returning to work in customers homes. Although not officially recommended, it is acceptance that numbers of tradesman and those involved in the home improvement industry are desperate to return to work. This is being driven by consumer demand, which by all accounts is starting to ignite. Guidelines from trade bodies are becoming more comprehensive and are now including agreement documents between homeowner and tradesperson to allow safe working in the home. As we move forward, we are going to hear more advice centring around Ryan’s core message ‘If you feel safe to do so, do it….I can’t understand why being sensible is that hard to understand’…..
