Matthew McShane, Sales and Marketing Manager at Warmaglaze Home Improvement, has shared a candid reflection on the evolution of his company’s approach to success in the competitive window industry. Speaking about the lessons he has learned over the past year, McShane described how a focus on high production volumes once defined the company’s operations but ultimately proved to be an unsustainable strategy.
“A year ago, we were producing 80 to 100 window frames a week, and at the time, it felt like an incredible achievement,” McShane said. He attributed this high output to the team’s skill, drive, and ambition, noting that it created a sense of momentum and success. However, he explained that this numbers-driven approach revealed significant shortcomings when examined more closely.
According to McShane, the realisation that quantity alone was not enough prompted a fundamental shift in priorities. “Chasing numbers is short-sighted,” he stated. “What really matters is delivering products that last, that perform, and that truly represent the craftsmanship of the work.”
Over the past year, Warmaglaze has focused on refining its processes and doubling down on quality over quantity. McShane described this change as transformative, with the company re-evaluating its production methods to ensure that every product meets the highest standards. “We’ve moved from just getting the job done to building a reputation we’re proud of,” he said.
McShane emphasised that while productivity metrics remain important, they are no longer the sole driving force behind the company’s strategy. Instead, excellence in craftsmanship and customer satisfaction have taken centre stage. He noted that this approach has led to greater customer appreciation and trust. “Homeowners may not know how many units you produce in a week, but they notice when a product exceeds their expectations,” he said.
This shift toward quality has not been without its challenges. McShane acknowledged that stepping away from a high-volume mindset can feel counterintuitive, particularly in a competitive industry. However, he argued that the long-term benefits of prioritizing quality far outweigh any temporary setbacks. “A reputation for excellence is worth far more than fleeting productivity,” he said.
Looking ahead, McShane pointed to the evolving demands of the window industry, where sustainability, durability, and performance are becoming key measures of success. He believes Warmaglaze’s renewed commitment to quality positions the company to meet these challenges head-on.
In offering advice to others in the industry, McShane stressed the importance of valuing quality over quantity. “It’s not just about how much you do—it’s about how well you do it,” he said, adding that while numbers may help build a business, it is quality that ultimately builds a legacy.
